Things you don’t want to see …

… when you fly as much as I do.

I can never figure out whether I think airliners.net is a source of some great photos, or just a slightly up-market version of trainspotting.

The Daily Coyote

Friday, February 15th, 2008

The Daily Coyote is a wonderful, and wonderfully executed photoblog.  The author, Shreve, adopted an orphaned Coyote pup, Charlie, and is telling the tale of his growing up and development.  The photography is both technically superb and wonderfully artistic without being excessively “arty”.   Worth a look if you’re a sucker for anything cute and furry.

Abingdon 4×4 Festival

My second website achievement of the weekend was getting the website for the Abingdon 4×4 Festival up and running.

Google Bizarreness

Thursday, January 10th, 2008

Random Acts of Reality is the blog of a London based paramedic, and is usually worth a read.  He claims his site is the number one search result on Google for “womble porn”.  And he’s right.

Bizarre!

Good Rant

Thursday, September 20th, 2007

Over at Twenty Sided Tale, Shamus Young has an excellent rant against

“the evil retarded pedophilic inbred cannibal Nazi liars at 2kGames. I will not be satisfied until the company is driven out of business and the involved parties are all conscripted into forced labor working in a malaria-infested South American turd mine. The company headquarters should then be burned to the ground and the ashes gathered up and disposed of in the same manner as depleted rods from a nuclear power plant. The building site will forever after remain a barren scar on the face of the world, since no life could hope to grow where…

I don’t know what pissed him off quite so much, but it’s a good rant.

How will I die….?

Tuesday, September 4th, 2007

With a bang, apparently:

How will I die?

Your Result: You will die while having sex.

Your last moments in this life will be enjoyable indeed…hopefully. Do not fear sex. Try not to become celibate as a way of escaping death. You cannot run from destiny.

You will die while saving someone’s life.

You will die in your sleep.

You will die in a car accident.

You will die in a nuclear holocaust.

You will die from a terminal illness.

You will die of boredom.

You will be murdered.

How will I die?

  • Tricks of the Trade by Matthew Baldwin has some great tips from 30 different professionals. My favourite (I’ve done it myself) is from the IT Helpdesk recommendation to use the abbreviation “PEBKAC” in the resolution notes of a problem. Problem Exists Between Keyboard And Chair.
  • It turns out that despite your eye having a 576 megapixels resolution, most people cannot distinguish the difference in quality between a 300dpi and a 150dpi photo when printed at 6×4″, when viewed at normal viewing distances.

I thought this article on the history of road safety was a  fascinating read.

A grand day out

Monday, August 27th, 2007

Yesterday we visited “A Country Affair”, also known as the Hampton Court Show. This annual event is a great place to wander around and chill out.  A few of the traders deserved a mention:

  • Herbal Haven have a wonderful collection of culinary and medicinal herbs (legal ones!), including varietes of mint I’d never even heard of.  Raspberry mint, anyone?
  • Hide Bound Tankards make wonderful replicas of medieval style leather tankards.  I bought a great one with a Welsh Dragon on it!
  • Chilli Pepper Pete, where I got some dried chilli peppers and made the mistake of tasting “Dragon’s Blood”.  Made from naga chilies – the hottest in the world – spiced up with 5.5 million SHU capsaicin extract, this stuff is incredible.  I had a tiny drop on a cracker, and the heat was just incredible: it just kept getting hotter and hotter for about a minute after I swallowed it – it seemed like a lot longer.  It was something like 20 minutes before the effect wore off.  Wow!

Despite being nearly chillied to death, it was a wonderful day out.

We also found out about the Emsworth Food Festival coming up in a few weeks….  That looks like a fun day out, too.
