WordPress Upgrade Breaks Theme

The existing theme wasn’t compatible with WordPress 2.8. This one is. It’ll do for now.

My second website achievement of the weekend was getting the website for the Abingdon 4×4 Festival up and running.

Transfer to a new host

I’m in the process of moving things to a new hosting provider so things might be patchy for a few days.

This is quite a complex change:

The Thames Valley 4×4 Forum that I’ve been hosting is being migrated back into the club’s main website now that they have MySQL available.
This blog will become the front end to my site.
Exciting stuff is happening with RangieWiki – watch this space for more!

Changes should be complete by the end of August.

New Theme

I know, I keep changing the theme on the site like some people keep changing their underwear. But I liked this one, and it was far superior to my efforts to tweak the previous theme into something I was happy with. I need to re-format some articles to work with this theme, and do some minor tweaking to bring some of the features back, but it shouldn’t take too long.

I promise to spend more time on the content and less time on the chrome in future.

Site Upgrade

The site has been upgraded to WordPress 2.2. You shouldn’t see any difference, though I’m working on some new features and extensions to be added. Watch this space.

What I’m Reading

You’ll notice a short section at the bottom right entitled “What I’m Reading”. This is a rather neat feature that combines with Google Reader which allows me to mark a page I’ve read in a blog as shared, and then have it show up in my shared items list – which I can then show on my home page as a fleeting glimpse at the best of what I’ve read of late.

RSS junkies can get the whole feed here, or you can bookmark this page.

And if you don’t know what RSS is, it’s essentially a protocol that lets you aggregate lots of blogs – like this one – into a single place to read them all and get notified when they’re updated. There’s a great explanation here. Basically it’s the best thing to hit the Internet since.. well, since HTML. Google Reader is as good an aggregator as any, and helps me keep up to date.

Theme Changes

Apologies for the rapidly changing themes on this site. I decided the theme I was using looked a little to garish, and have been trying to find a good alternative. I’ve settled on this one for the layout, but I’m still tweaking colours and other details.

It’s been a bit quiet around here recently….

I’ve been very remiss about posting stuff here in the last few weeks. I think I tried to set the bar fairly high on what I was going to consider as acceptable content and ended up finding nothing that was interesting. So, I’m going to aim to post something worth writing every day.

This means that I’m going to be widening the net a little, and posting some links to some of the funniest and most bizarre links I see on the net. I’m also going to be including more technology posts relating to computing and the Internet, and especially relating to my day job working in IT Security. You don’t have to read it all! I won’t be offended if you skip the techie stuff because you’re only interested in the cars.

New Theme, Software Upgraded

I just upgraded WordPress, the software behind this blog, to the latest version. Please let me know if you get any problems.

I also installed the new theme, and have tweaked it a little to suit my purposes. I like it; it’s a bit cleaner than the fMulti theme I was using, and looks very “flickr”/web2.0 in style.
