What I’m Reading

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

You’ll notice a short section at the bottom right entitled “What I’m Reading”.  This is a rather neat feature that combines with Google Reader which allows me to mark a page I’ve read in a blog as shared, and then have it show up in my shared items list – which I can then show on my home page as a fleeting glimpse at the best of what I’ve read of late.

RSS junkies can get the whole feed here, or you can bookmark this page.

And if you don’t know what RSS is, it’s essentially a protocol that lets you aggregate lots of blogs – like this one – into a single place to read them all and get notified when they’re updated.  There’s a great explanation here.  Basically it’s the best thing to hit the Internet since.. well, since HTML.   Google Reader is as good an aggregator as any, and helps me keep up to date.

I was reminded of it by this post on the “Creating Passionate Users” blog – I remembered that sign in the park in Sydney, but this one is just as fun.

British Starbucks are filthy

Tuesday, January 30th, 2007

British Starbucks are filthy or so says the report on Boing Boing this morning.

I’m sorry, I think Starbucks is the most overrated coffee on the planet.  I can get a beer for the price of a medium sized latte, and now I find they expect me to clean up after them?  Sorry, at anything up to £4 for a cup of coffee I expect waitress service within seconds of sitting down, and she’d better be cute, too.

Oh, and coffee that I actually like, rather that something I’m just drinking for a bit of a change.

Starbucks: Real coffee is made with a drip filter machine, not an espresso press.  It should be hot as hell, black as night, and sweet as a stolen kiss, and in the cup within 10 minutes of hitting the “brew” button.

A Virus from your Sat Nav?

Monday, January 29th, 2007

It’s not often I get the chance to write about computers and cars in the same article, but this is just such an opportunity. News has broken this week that Tom Tom has managed to ship a bunch of GO 910 units with a virus on board.

The virus doesn’t affect the Tom Tom’s operation – it won’t suddenly send you off the end of a pier. At least, no more than usual. But when you hook it up to your PC to download maps or perform a backup, that’s when the trouble will start – unless your anti-virus software is up to date and functional.

Compared with the trouble and inconvenience of re-installing a PC, anti-virus software makes a good investment. Check out some of the lesser known solutions like AVG, Panda, or the new kid on the block, Nod32 as well as the big guys with big advertising budgets who don’t get mentioned here. They all work, and will all provide about the same level of protection if kept up to date.

Stunning Photograph Of Space Shuttle Discovery

Monday, January 29th, 2007

Over at A Welsh view, there’s a tunning Photograph Of Space Shuttle Discovery.

I saw a Titan launch back in about 1993, during daylight, and that was pretty impressive.

That was in daylight, and not as powerful a rocket. I wish I’d been there to see that launch.

Theme Changes

Sunday, January 28th, 2007

Apologies for the rapidly changing themes on this site. I decided the theme I was using looked a little to garish, and have been trying to find a good alternative. I’ve settled on this one for the layout, but I’m still tweaking colours and other details.

Mythbusters

Mythbusters is compelling TV for trivia minded people. This excellent site has a great list of their myths and which ones were “busted”.

You don’t have to be religious to be good

Saturday, January 27th, 2007

Drawing on a wide range of studies to cross-match faith – measured by belief in God and acceptance of evolution – with homicide and sexual behavior, Paul found that secular societies have lower rates of violence and teenage pregnancy than societies where many people profess belief in God.

It’s been a bit quiet around here recently….

I’ve been very remiss about posting stuff here in the last few weeks. I think I tried to set the bar fairly high on what I was going to consider as acceptable content and ended up finding nothing that was interesting. So, I’m going to aim to post something worth writing every day.

This means that I’m going to be widening the net a little, and posting some links to some of the funniest and most bizarre links I see on the net. I’m also going to be including more technology posts relating to computing and the Internet, and especially relating to my day job working in IT Security. You don’t have to read it all! I won’t be offended if you skip the techie stuff because you’re only interested in the cars.
