Wherefore art thou, Arial?

Typefaces are one of those things that most of us don’t care very deeply about. If you use a computer, you probably think “Times New Roman” is “old fashioned”, “Arial” is modern, “Courier” looks like a typewriter, and that’s about it.
But there are thousands of different font facts, often with detail and history behind them. This article about the humble Arial font is one such story.
